A museum with countless shoes
A museum in which everything revolves around shoes, yes, that can be found in Vienna too, and that is precisely what Alexandra Rauch from the Shoemuseum introduces you today. This museum is really something special and if you have always been interested in shoes, then this museum should be on your agenda.
And since the Josefstädterstraße is only a few meters away, you can have a fine cup of coffee afterwards.
Shortly introduce your museum...
The history of the shoemaker and orthopedic handcrafted craftsmanship in the course of time is the focus of the exhibition, which is presented of an area of around 100 sqm.
A workshop allows a nostalgic look back in time. The visitor is given the opportunity to learn about technical procedures, materials, traditional techniques and the development of the history shoes.
What makes your museum so unique?
Our exhibits, starting with the tools, the hunting boots of Emperor Franz Josefs or exclusive shoe design from the second half of the 19th century up to the Crazy Shoes will find your interest and admiration for the skills of the shoemakers from then on to the present day.
The museum has an extensive collection of historical shoes from different centuries. You will learn, for example, what the shoemaker’s life was or interesting anecdotes, e.g. the history of the shoemaker's coat of arms.
How did you get the idea to start this museum?
Even the French sun king Louis, the XIV knew about the art of the shoemakers. His shoemaker, Nicolas Lestage, who mastered the art of making a shoe from a piece of leather, he had forbidden to open the secret of his craftmanship, with the threat of death. And it is a high skill, which can also be admired in the Viennese Shoemuseum.
We would like to take the Viennese as well as tourists from all over the world into the world of shoemakers, to fascinate them and to make them smile.
Why did you choose Vienna as location?
Vienna is our center of life, so it was clear where the Viennese Shoemuseum will open its doors.
Is there something special abou the location of your museum?
Do not miss it. The craziest shoes of Europe: from „It's me, Mario!“ Up to „Ich steh am Wörthersee“, summerfeeling inclusive!
And we have something very special for you: our shoemaker! The detailing replicate of the bell of Mariahilferkirche will fascinate you.
