Diversity compact! Discover Favoriten
Favoriten, the most populous district of Vienna is as far as the number of inhabitants concerned actually larger than Innsbruck, Salzburg and also Linz. Did you know that?
Who gave the district its name Favoriten?
I'll tell you! There was a hunting castle called Favorita, which stood in today's 4th district, next to the Favoritenstraße, and the still preserved part now houses the private school Theresianum.
A colourful mix...
Favoriten is colorful, 2016 were a total of 43.4% of the population of foreign origin. The Serbian community ranks highest, followed by the Turkish people.
These influences are also felt at the Viktor-Adler market, which already exists for more than 125 years! A total of 81 stands offer vegetables and fruit, delicacies, textiles, flowers, Austrian, Turkish, Greek and Indian specialties, wines, vinegar and oil specialties, as well as many other things in the streets around the market.
In the adjacent Leibnizgasse you will probably find the most authentic farmers market in Vienna. This is because of the still practiced market crying also known as "screaming market" - alone for that reason worth seeing. Opening hours: Mon - Sat about 7-12: 30
A Vienna with locals tip: Enjoy the Turkish brunch on Saturday after the market visit!
Every Saturday and Sunday you can taste a lot of Turkish specialties at the breakfast buffet from the Mevlana restaurant at Pernerstorfergasse 31.
... invites you to be discovered
Stroll through Favoriten, take impressions, perhaps make a stop at the Johanneskirche at Keplerplatz and then explore the new Sonnwendviertel, a huge new area that is currently being built around the new Main Station. Architecture fans and city planers will be amazed.
And if you do not have enough, look at the Gegenbauer family, when guided tours of the vinegar brewery in Waldgasse 3 will be offered. Once a month Erwin Gegenbauer leads you to the acid world, tells the story of the family and company and you can try the vinegars and oils.
