Lauras Vienna Part 2

Moin Moin, it is me again, Laura and today follows the second part of my experiences in Vienna.

In the second week, our teachers were no longer on site and we were now on our own. We settled in slowly. On Monday my day started at 8 o'clock. After work, I went for a drink with a friend in the loft. In the evening, the view from there is especially nice. You can see the center of Vienna from above and you can enjoy relaxed jazz music. If you want, you can eat there.

Places to be

In my time here I have discovered many places where you can drink something and where the environment is really comfortable. Whether it's a cocktail on the Danube Island overlooking the water, a longdrink in the 25hours attic or a Turkish tea in the cozy Mesk. For those who prefer luxury, the 57 lounge in the DC Tower is the place to go. It is the highest bar in Austria and from 20 clock prevails a dress code. Women should come in a cocktail dress and men in a shirt or jacket. As a tip, I advise to reserve a table beforehand, otherwise it will be very difficult to get a seat.

The Danube Island Festival

At the second weekend was then the Danube Island Festival. With a total of eleven stages, 18 themed islands and 600 hours of program it was going on a lot. It reminded me a bit of our "Kieler Woche". There are many live stages and there is a great atmosphere. There is also a wide selection of regional and international food. I tasted a tree cake for the first time and I must say it tastes really good. There are also many artists on the side of the road, such as rappers, who just start to freestyle or portrait painters. My friend and I have a cartoon of us as a reminder. Whether we resemble the drawing, it is arguable.

The Mariahilferstraße

In the next few weeks we have done a lot more. If you are interested in fashion, I would advise you to go shopping in Mariahilfer Straße. There is a very large selection of shopping stores. Street artists beautify the shopping trip with beautiful music or a dance. Recently there were Indian dancers who made music and danced to it. The women had traditional saris on and the dhotis men. It was very worth seeing.

Vienna's most beautiful viewpoints

For someone who wants to see Vienna in the evening from above, I would definitely recommend going to the Wilhelminenberg. At night it is especially nice to picnic there and enjoy the view. Who prefers to make a trip during the day, I would advise to go to the Kahlenberg. The view is also very nice and in the small cafe you can eat a piece of cake and enjoy the view. On the day I was on the Kahlenberg, there were two wedding ceremonies, including a same-sex one. I think it's very nice to celebrate on such a viewing platform. The pictures must have become fantastic.

An excursion to Bratislava

As you travel from Vienna only one hour by bus to Bratislava, we also made a trip there. In the penultimate week our teachers were back and I had booked the tickets for the bus in advance. At 12:30 the bus started and at 20:45 it went back. The old town is very beautiful and from the castle you have a beautiful view of Bratislava. The Bon Bon manufactory is perfect for all sweet teeth. I bought a bar of chocolate and Lolli pins for my relatives. In the evening we wanted to go for some food. I would recommend to eat a burger in the Regal Rooftop. At 5 pm they open and you can eat burgers or enjoy a shisha with a drink on the cozy terrace. The view is very nice, the food tastes good and it is reasonably priced.

Linguistic differences between Austrian and German

In addition to the new places I saw, I also learned a lot about the Austrian language. There are some differences between German and Austrian. Sometimes misunderstandings can arise as a result. For example, the German word "boring" in Austrian means "fad" or the word "ur" is used to reinforce an adjective. The last time I went shopping, I told the seller that I did not need a bag. He just looked at me confused and asked me "Do not need a Sackerl?" I had heard the word Sackerl for the first time, but the fact that I have previously said bag, I knew what he meant and refused smirkingly. After six weeks I got used to the language already a bit. So sometimes I say "yes eh" instead of "yes".

Vienna is a very multicultural city and I have met many people here. When my friends and I had a drink at Stephansplatz in the evening, we met tourists from Mexico. Since we learn Spanish at school, we were able to talk and laughed a lot. In the tram we also met a Spanish seniors group, which was very happy when I told them that we speak a little Spanish. Not for nothing is Vienna the city with the most beautiful culture of life. I had a very nice time and definitely plan to come back again.

I hope I could give you a little insight into my journey and give you some tips, which is worth seeing, if you are in Vienna.

On my list is still the butterfly house, the Albertina, the Belvedere and the Danube center. I hope in my last week I can really manage all those things what I have planned for myself. Otherwise I have to come back.

Greetings Laura
