Masterpieces of Austrian art - the Leopold Museum

Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann – well known names of world famous Austrian artists that make the start to today's blogpost.

Because I will tell you more about the famous place in Vienna, where you can admire their and many other art works by Austrian and contemporary artists: the Leopold Museum.

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a tour through the Leopold Museum and was once again impressed by this museum.

Although I had been here already a few times, I always discover new facets of this unique collection. And in addition, there are also special exhibitions on a regular basis that are chosen to match the permanent exhibition.

Experience world famous art very close

Main focus of the entire collection is, in addition to Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, is on the art works of the Wiener Werkstätte, Vienna around 1900 and Art Nouveau, graphics, 19th Century, Africa and the theme from Expressionism to New Objectivity 1908-1938.

So you really get an unique insight into Austrian as well as international art. The works of Egon Schiele, which are in the Leopold collection, is the world's largest and most important collection of works by him.

In no other museum you can experience this very special time around 1900 so vivid and impressive. The museum has a very special flair and you really feel like being part of the history.

The collector and the collection

The collection itself was originally a private collection of the Leopold family. Already with 22 years Rudolf Leopold began with the acquisition of the first paintings, more than 5200 exhibits should it ultimately be in the course of his life.

1994 the entire collection Leopold was consolidated by Rudolf Leopold into the Leopold Museum Private Foundation a foundation on a puplic benefit / non-profit basis -  with the support from the Republic of Austria and the National Bank of Austria.

From 2001 on, the collection was also made available to the public in the form of the Leopold Museum.

A truely fascinating person, so if you want to know more about the collector Rudolf Leopold and his life, then you find plenty of information on the website of the Leopold Museum about him and the collection itself.

For children, the museum has come up with something special too: the LEO Kids Atelier.

Every Sunday afternoon it is all about the art works of the Leopold Collection. The children learn in a playful way about the fascinating art works, their stories and that a museum is anything but boring.

More about this offer you find on the website.

Information about the tickets and tours are provided on the website of the Leopold Museum too.

I have a special tip for you too. On some days there are free guided tours through the collection and special exhibitions. So you only pay for the ticket and get the guided tour for free.

The next dates you can find here.

About the MuseumsQuartier

At the end, I also want to tell you in short (not too much, because there will be an own blog post soon) a bit about the MuseumsQuartier itself.

In Museumsquartier you will not only find the Leopold Museum, but this special place is really a center for art, culture and cuisine. There are so many more exciting museums and institutions here such as the MUMOK or the Kunsthalle, a great offer of restaurants and also for exciting offers for children like the ZOOM Kids Museum.

And right now, in summer, the whole area is just beautiful to sit here and enjoy this cozy atmosphere. As I said the offer here is simply amazing and there is something for every taste.
