The thirteenth district, Hietzing, is a heavily populated yet green urban area in the Western part of the city. It used to be a village, and is a beautiful area for a stroll among old villas. Whilst densely populated, almost three quarters of the district’s surface are classified as greenspace, including the Lainzer Tiergarten wildlife preserve and large areas of the Vienna Woods. The most notable sight of the district is the large and beautiful Schoenbrunn Palace and Gardens complex, a can’t-miss on a visit to Vienna.
The baroque palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural and historical monuments in the country, with a history of the Habsburg Empire spanning over 300 years. The Gardens are also home to the enchanting Schoenbrunn Zoo, the oldest zoo in the entire world, dating back to 1752. Other notable sites include the 19th century Habsburg Hermesvilla Palace in the Lainzer Tiergarten, and the Klimt Villa, where the famous painter lived for the last seven years
of his life, featuring a permanent exhibition of his studio – the only one of his former ateliers in Vienna.
